CHARGERS RUN PAST THE PANTHERS WITH A 17-14 WIN!

History was made Friday night as the Central Chargers (2-4, 1-2) defeated the cross-town rival Fossil Ridge Panthers (0-6, 0-3) for the first time in the school’s history by a score of 17-14 at Keller ISD Stadium.  Fossil Ridge started the scoring in the first quarter with a rushing touchdown by Ridge’s Tray Lynch but was shutout by the Charger defense until the 4th quarter.  The defense was led by solid tackling from linebacker Stuart Redding, explosive defensive line play by Jacob Burnley, and aggressive play from safety Jacob Zedik.  The defensive prominence was highlighted by two interceptions by Marcus Fore and another one by Matt Gibson.  The offense kicked into gear in the second half with a 27 yard field goal by kicker Austin Morrow and a 32 yard passing touchdown from quarterback Corey Fogle to wide receiver Israel Valentin.  This score was set up by an amazing third down conversion on a 33 yard pass from Fogle to Taylor Munguia.  Fossil Ridge answered with a 10 yard touchdown run by James Jordan to take the lead half way through the 4th quarter.  On the ensuing drive, the Chargers got the ball on their own 18 and drove the length of the field due to a dominating running game from Trenton Turrentine (15 carries for 52 yards) and Blake Nichols (13 carries for 92 yards).  The offensive line consisting of Cody Cutting, Bryce Harrah, RJ Adame, Steven Pointer, Kenny Gonzalez, Simon Goines, and Trey Holt dominated the line of scrimmage for most of the night.  There was no greater example of this when Nichols broke through the left side of the line and sprinted 38 yards for the game winning score.  The defense then held true to their form for most of the game by holding the Panthers on 4 downs and the Central offense was able to run out the rest of the clock by picking up the last of their 18 first downs on the night and sealing the victory.  The Chargers will carry this momentum to play the Trinity Trojans (4-2, 3-0) at Keller ISD Stadium this Friday night at 7:30 pm.

Chargers Fight Through Lightning and Legacy For Season Opening Win

The 2009 Central Chargers (1-0) football season started out with a hard fought victory over the Mansfield Legacy Broncos (0-1) winning 19-6 at Mansfield ISD’s Vernon Newsom Stadium on Thursday night.  The Broncos opened the game with an impressive 59 yard drive that ended with a touchdown and a missed extra point.  That was the last time that the Charger defense would allow the Broncos on the scoreboard.  For the rest of the game the Broncos were held to only 146 total yards with a strong performance up front by Devin Daniels and Stuart Redding and tight coverage in the secondary by Marcus Fore, Matt Gibson, and the rest of the Charger secondary.  The Chargers offense used an effective running game and an efficient passing game to attack the Broncos defense.  Offensive guards Kenny Gonzalez and Bryce Harrah opened gaping holes in the Bronco defensive line for running backs Blake Nichols and Trenton Turrentine for 121 total yards rushing.  Quarterback Corey Fogle used a high efficiency rate to get crucial yardage through the air in critical situations, connecting with Israel Valentin and Griffin Meador.  Quarterback/Wide Receiver Daniel Wheeler scored twice and Garrett Gonzalez caught a 24 yard touchdown pass from Fogle to seal the game.  Finally, the Charger special teams made a huge difference in the field position battle averaging almost 40 yards by Aaryn Maloney’s 3 punts and pinning the Broncos deep with great kickoffs by Maloney.  Austin Morrow was one for one on extra point attemps.  Next up for the Chargers are the Newman Smith Trojans for their first home game of the 2009 season next Friday at KISD Stadium.

Newman Smith is coming off a near upset of top ranked Denton Guyer.  The Trojans fell to the Wildcats 34-28 last week.  Newman Smith has great over all team speed on defense and tremendous big play ability on offense, led by QB Aldo Quiroga.

CHARGERS vs. KELLER

On Thursday, October 1, the Chargers took on the Keller Indians at KISD Stadium.  What seemed as if it would be a stormy night, ended up being a perfect night for football.  The game got started a little later than normal due to the lightning delay that took place during the earlier game.  Once the game got started there was no doubt that the Chargers meant business on both sides of the ball.  The offense scored early and often making the Indian defense wonder what hit them.  The Chargers did it on the ground behind solid offensive line that consisted of Garrett Wickham, Brenton Rhea, Anthony Amerson, Jacob Cook, and  DeAndre Kirtz.  The O-line created space for running backs Tyler Barnett and CJ Kirk all night long.  Tanner Tausch continued his good play and threw several good passes throughout the game spreading it around to different Charger receivers.  Khari  Burns was the recipients of one of Tausch’s passes, which resulted in a Charger touchdown from about 15 yards out.  Burns showed a lot of ability making would be tacklers miss on his way to the endzone.
The Charger Defensive was equally impressive only giving up 9 points for the night.  The Indian quarterback was pressured all night long by a fierce Charger defensive front.  The Indian quarterback was intercepted three times officially and came close to being picked off a couple of more times.  The beneficiaries of the Indian passes included Jalen Canty, Devin Zedik, and Andre Morgan.  Safety Kyle Kirchoffer made his presence known as well by making plays all over the field.  He had several good tackles in the second half of play.  The Chargers defeated the Indians by a score of 26 to 9.  This gives the Chargers a district record of 2-0.
Next week the Chargers are at home to facing the other inner district rival Fossil Ridge.  This game should also be a battle!!!!  Check back next week to find out how it ended.

CHARGERS vs. L.D. Bell

On Thursday, September 24th, the Chargers took on the Blue Raiders of L.D. Bell at Charger Field.  There was a good crowd and both teams came out ready to play.  The Chargers were banged up on the offensive side of the ball missing a few key players to start the game.  Yet and still, the Chargers came out and moved the ball on a solid Blue Raider defense.  Quarterback Tanner Tausch did a good job spreading the ball around to various wide receivers.  Trey Pemberton was the recipient of one of Tausch’s passes.  The particular reception came on a slant which resulted in a Charger touchdown.  Tyler Barnett did the work on the ground behind good blocking from the offensive line and running back/wide receiver Khari Burns.
The Charger Defense came up big on more than one occasion, but their best effort came with the Blue Raiders pinned deep in their own territory.  Following a great punt by Tausch that rolled out of bounds in side of the five yard line, the Charger Defense talked a Bell ball carrier in the end zone for a safety.  The two points that the Chargers received because of the safety, helped to even the score at 22-22.  The game ended in a tie after the Charger Defense again had to stop a Bell team that was threatening to score as the final seconds ticked off clock.  The Blue Raiders had time enough to attempt a game winning field goal that came up short.
Next week the Chargers face inner district rival Keller.  This game should be a battle!!!!  Check back next week to find out how it ended.

CHARGERS vs. RICHLAND

On Thursday, September 17th, the Chargers to on the Richland Rebels at the Birdville Fine Arts Center on the campus of Birdville High School.  It was a back and forth battle between two evenly matched teams.  The Charger defense played extremely well throughout the game.  Late in the fourth quarter with the Chargers down by a score of 9 to 6, the defense came up with a big stop.  The Charger offense marched right down the field and scored with very little time left on the clock.  The offense was lead by solid play upfront from the offensive line.  Sophomore quarterback, Tanner Tausch and junior running back Tyler Barnett were instrumental in the drive.  Sophomore wide receiver Khari Burns caught a pass from Tausch that helped the Chargers keep the drive alive.  Tausch then connected with wide receiver Ryan Phillips in order for the Chargers to get into the red zone.   A couple of plays later Barnett scored on a run play from inside of the 5 yard line.  This gave the Chargers the lead, but the Rebels still had hope with time on the clock.  Again the Charger defense came up big preventing the scoring.  Charger defensive backs Steven Richardson, Devan Waters, Jalen Canty, and Randall Grizzle stopped the rebels from connecting on down the field passes that would have given them a change score.  Overall it was a great day for the Chargers.

CHARGERS vs. MANSFIELD LEGACY

On Wednesday, August 2009, the JV Crimson team got their season under way against the Broncos of Mansfield Legacy.  It began with the Charger offense led by sophomore quarterback Tanner Tausch taking the ball right down the field for a quick score.  The drive had a good mixture of run and pass.  The drive was capped off when Tausch threw a strike, connecting with wide receiver Trey Pemberton on the quick slant for the Chargers first score of the season.  The Chargers also got a score from Gator Alexander on a pass from Tausch in the second quarter.  Tyler Barnett contributed to the scoring on a long run late in the game.  The Charger offensive line led by junior Brenton Rhea, created holes all night for running backs Tyler Barnett and Greg Wilson.  The offensive line also gave Tausch plenty of time to throw the ball when the Chargers decided to pass.  The Charger Defense played well led by sophomore safeties Steven Richardson and Devan Waters.  The defense did a great job of holding the Broncos to two scores after a couple of turnovers by the offense and a key injury to sophomore running back Greg Wilson.  Wilson was a force early in the second half.  He definitely left his mark on the game with a few tough runs.  One of which reversed the momentum back to the Chargers.  After the momentum shift the Charger Defense held strong, coming up with big stops when needed.  It was a back and forth battle with the Chargers prevailing by a final score of 20 to 13.

CHARGERS vs. MANSFIELD LEGACY

The Central JV Gold played a talented Legacy Sophomore team Wednesday evening.  Our offense moved the ball well stalling out short of the goal line on many possessions.  The defense struggled with the might strength of the Legacy power house.  The coaching staff looks forward to getting quality time with the team in re-grouping and further teaching more of our Charger offense and defense.  Last weeks short schedule of practices left us less prepared for our first ball game.

The 2009 Crimson team began their season with a strong showing at Mansfield Legacy with a 20-6 victory over the Broncos.  The Chargers were led by their defense early which held the Broncos to 6 points on the evening.  The 1st 2 drives on offense resulted in punts, but on the 3rd drive on 3rd down deep in their own territory Naythan Steele hit Cody Burd on a reverse pass for a big gain.  A couple plays later quarterback Daniel Kniffin hooked up with receiver Clyde Pillot for the 1st touchdown of the year.  Two plays later Central’s Taylor Karkkainen forced a fumble that was recovered by Austin Griffin.  A couple plays later Ty Webb scored on a short run.  Alex Schneider added two more points on the conversion.  In the 2nd half the Chargers ate up the clock behind the blocking of their offensive line and the running of multiple running backs.  Jacob Stewart added a 3rd touchdown in the 4th quarter.  Join us next Thursday as the Chargers face Newman Smith at Charger Field.

Week One vs. Newman Smith
The Crimson team continued its strong play last night against Newman Smith in their 21-6 victory.  The Chargers marched the ball down the field behind strong blocking by the offensive line.  Alex Schnieder scored his 1st touchdown of the night on a 15 yard run.  Cody Burd put the PAT through the uprights.  Newman Smith didn’t take long to score as it returned the pursuing kickoff for a touchdown.  The Chargers were back at it again on the next drive when Daniel Kniffin connected with Greg Jackson on a 3rd and 5 to continue the drive that ended in a quarterback sneak by Kniffin and another Burd kick.  The Chargers were unable to capitalize on 3 forced turnovers 2 Naythan Steele interception and 1 defensive fumble recovery.  The defense continued its strong showing and Alex Schneider added his 2nd touchdown of the night in the 3rd quarter, followed by a Burd kick.  The Chargers don’t play in weeks  and will play host to the Richland Rebels on Thursday September 17th.

Bronco Defense Too Much for Chargers

The Central Chargers Freshman Gold Team struggled in its first game of the season against the Mansfield Legacy Broncos, losing 20-0 at Legacy High School Field on Wednesday.  The Broncos were held to only 6 points in the first half by a stingy Charger defense led by Tyler Ward, Conner Gventer, and Corey Roberts.  The offense struggled all game against a tough Legacy defense.  Casey Zedik had a productive game overall at the quarterback position, but was hampered by a bruised wrist on his throwing arm.  The offensive line provided good pass protection, led by Dylan Lewis, but running lanes were hard to come by versus the tough Bronco front 7.  Defensive Coordinator Mark Gillem had the following to say about the loss, “We came out and played really well in the first half, but their size and athleticism really wore us down as the game progressed.  I am excited about having a full week of practice this next week to iron out our issues on both sides of the ball before we take on a tough Newman Smith team.”  The Chargers next game will be their first home game of the season and first freshman game ever on the new artificial turf of Charger Field.
